☆ Japanese Bath Etiquette ☆

For most of us who are not raised in Japan, the Onsen, or hot spring, is kind of unfamiliar place to be. If it is your first time, you might not consider visiting because of the unknown bath etiquette. Nonetheless, bathing in an onsen has a lot of good qualitities!
Here are some Do’s and Dont’s for making your onsen experience a good one.

・Please take off your underwear. Yes. All of it.
– any clothes are seen as dirtying the bath. Do not be ashamed of your body. Nudity is natural.
・Take a shower first before entring the onsen
– You can use a towel to wash yourself with soap while sitting on a small stool. Rinse carefully before dipping to the onsen
・ No running and diving to the onsen
– many surfaces are slippery and water is really hot so be careful!
・You can use a small bath towel while walking for modesty.

・Tattoos are not allowed in any Onsen even a small tattoo.
– Tattoos are very uncommon in Japan and often indicates Yakusa or Gangster

・Hot springs is very healthful, rejuvinating, refreshing and sometimes have healing qualities to cure skin conditions.

☆ Date with your lovely kids ☆

The month of February is often celebrated by young couples or people who are looking for a date or young ladies giving chocolates to their crushes. So I thought, why don’t we date our children for a change? I think they will love to be part and experience valentines day!
You also do not have to spend too much to make them happy and catch their hearts.

Here are some reasonable but enjoyable places to take your kids around the city.

1. Tokyo Fire Musuem (Free Admission)
– If your child likes fireman and firetrucks, this is the place to be. Old and new firetrucks, firefighters uniform can be seen the museum. There are fire-fighter-related games, puzzles and animated films for kids.

2. Rabbit Cafe (600 Yen per 30 minutes)
– Bunnys are adorable whether your an adult or a kid. You can rest and drink coffee while your kids pet, play and feed the cute rabbits.

3. Metro Museum (210 Yen)
– Most kids, including mine, love trains. This museum focuses on the Tokyo subway system. There are small and big model trains and also driving simulators.

4. Meguro Parasitological Musuem (Free Admission)
– This is one of the places you will not go for a date with the girl of your life, but your kids are sure to have fun in this venue. Of course, that is if they are interested in creepy things like parasites.

☆ “節分” Setsubun ☆

On February 3, an event called Setsubun is celebrated, which literally means “division of seasons” and marks the day before the first day of spring.
On this day, there is a custom called 豆まき Mamemaki where people throw and scatter roasted soybeans inside and outside their houses while chanting
鬼は外、福は内 “Oni wa soto, Fuku wa uchi”
Devils out! Good luck in!

It is believed that evil is warded of by throwing beans and that good fortune will then come to one’s home.
After throwing the beans, people usually eat the same number of beans which equals to their age. There is a belief that this will bring happiness throughout the year.

In Kansai area, some people eat a Makizushi called 恵方巻 “Ehomaki” Lucky Direction Roll while facing the year’s lucky compass direction which is determined by the zodiac symbol of that year.

Children will love this bean-throwing event! If you have a child and it’s your first time doing it, it will be one of the memorable moments of your children.

We have just entered the last month of 2014 but it also means that we are approaching a new year!!
December is also one of the most awaited month for some people. Its the season for gift giving, family reunions and a long vacation to spend time with family!

In Japan they spend december a little bit different from other countries. One example is sending postcards as a greeting for the New Year. This is called Nengajo (年賀状) in Japanese. Let me tell you a little information about this tradition on the article below.

☆UR 1 Month Free Campaign☆

There is a new list of apartments having 1 month free rent campaign which started last Monday. Its still not too late to move to a new place this year!

U29 campaign (Partly), Sept 1 ~ Nov 30
(Rent 20% discounted, up to a 3 year contract, under 29 years old only) Please inquire for more information!!

☆How to: Pay monthly rent in UR apartment?☆

One very important thing to remember and not to forget about when you are renting an apartment is to pay the rent bill on time or before its due date.

In UR-housing, Automatic Direct Bank Transfer is the most convenient way to pay your rent. You do not need to go to the bank or to your landlord to pay and you will also do not miss to pay as rent is automatically taken from your bank.

You can find more information about paying rent, late payments on the link below.

http://www.ur-housing.com/lifestyle/2842/

☆Nengajo（年賀状）☆

Nengajo is almost like sending a Christmas card in the West, however there is no religious significance for it and they send it for a different reason. The Japanese send many Nengajo every year, which makes the post office very busy during the end of December and the beginning of January. They either send it to their relatives, friends, officemates to express gratitude or maintain relationship.

Most often, they use the zodiac sign of the coming year as characters in their postcards. In 2015, its the Year of the Sheep. Japanese people starts buying these postcards as early as end of November. They send these Nengajo’s so that they arrive on January 1st.
The usual schedule of sending the Nengajo is between December 15th to December 28th.

Sending postcards also an opportunity for Japanese to demonstrate their handwriting skills(Shodo) as addressing and personal message is generally done by hand.

If you are planning to send postcards to your Japanese friends, you can use the usual greetings below.
They will surely be happy to receive a message from you!

Akemashite Omedeto-gozaimasu!
（新年）あけましておめでとうございます！
Happiness to you on the dawn of new year!

Kotoshi mo yoroshiku onegaishimasu!
今年もよろしくお願いします！
I hope for your favour again in the coming year!

☆Kyoto☆

Today we are proudly and very excited to introduce my favorite city in Japan, Kyoto as having countless temples, shrines and other historically priceless structures.

In fact, Kyoto served as Japan capital and the emperor’s resident from 794 to 1868. With a population of 1.4 million people.

We discovered some very nice and must visit places below.

Kiyomizudera
The temple was founded in 778 even before Kyoto became the capital of Japan. Kiyomizu Stage was built using special method, huge pillars were assembled without using a single nail. The view from is stage is stunningly beautiful.

Kinkaku-ji(The Golden Pavilion)
Officially named Rokuon-ji is a Zen Buddhist temple with gold-leaf-adorned which was founded in 1397, recognised by UNESCO as a World Cultural Heritage.

Nijo-jo(Japanese castle)
Nijo Castle was found in 1603 by Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first shogun of the Edo Period(1603-1867) one of the must visits for Japanese castle lovers. (World Cultural Heritage)

Gion
I would give this place a must visit, one of the most exclusive and well-known Geisha districts in all of Japan. High concentration of traditional wooden machiya and merchant house would give you the best feel of ancient Japan!!

☆Indian Town Origin☆
Do you know how Edogawa-ku became the so called Indian town in Japan? 25% of Indian nationals in Japan are living in Edogawa-ku, Tokyo. Koto-ku, Tokyo comes the next one.

Under our research, according to an interpretation from Mr. Jagmohan S. Chandrani, chairman of Indian Community of Edogawa who came to Japan in 1978. We are pleased to release a concentrated article.

“The year 2,000 problem” was the main beginning of high demand in IT professionals from India, and Edogawa-ku somehow was the perfect place:
1) Easy commute to Nihonbashi/Otemachi where most of financial and international companies located here.
2) UR has a fairly good number of apartments in Edogawa-ku and for its famously well-known system of none guarantor which eased difficulty of getting housing.
3) Especially in Nishi Kasai as a rising dormitory town of mixed cultures where gives a good capacity of foreign residents.
4) Moreover, Indian grocery shops and Indian schools open in Mizue, Funabori and Nishi Kasai.
Edogawa-ku has then achieved a solid position of Indian town.

Do you know anything else? Please tell us about it!! or do you know if there is any other Indian town in Japan? info@ur-whitestone.com
